Finca Flichman Malbec Robles 2008 ($8 in restaurant, $4 in store)
Another great value wine enjoyed at a Mendoza restaurant. This Malbec is less fruity than the typical entry-level young Malbec, and you can taste the oakiness (roble in Spanish). There is a lingering taste of spiciness after each sip, and it goes surprisingly well with empanadas. You may be beginning to think that we are drunks because we are always ordering bottles of wine at restaurants here. We can not deny that we enjoy a bottle of wine at a restaurant, but the real reason is that the alternative is a glass of swill. If you order a “copa de vino” at a restaurant in Argentina, it will often be served with a bottle of seltzer water on the assumption that you will need to cut this sugary concoction in order to c0nsume it. After a few of these disastrous experiences (and the relative cheapness of bottles of wine at restaurants), we have decided to obey our stomachs and embrace our inner drunkards.
