Arriving at 11:30pm in a city like Mendoza does not make a great first impression. It’s a nice city of about 100,000 residents, but after Buenos Aires it is a little underwhelming even during the the popular Saturday dining hour of midnight. However, there are two things that Mendoza offers in abundance.
One of them is overpriced bland food. The other is great prices for bottles of wine in restaurants and a great selection at even the most ho-hum of establishments, including the humble pizza and empanada cafe. At one of these cafes we enjoyed a nice bottle of Los Arboles ($8 in restaurant, $4 in store), which was just about the fruitiest Malbec we have had. Given the varietal, that’s saying something. The nice light body reminded us more of a casual Pinot Noir, and we could probably drink this bottle every day. It tastes especially good after a 16 hour bus-ride.
