Mexican cities are loud. Music blares from storefronts and restaurants. Inspection-free cars rattle and grunt down the roads. Saws, jackhammers, and pick-axes accompany the frequent construction sites. In order to reach their audience, food vendors have gotten creative as they walk or cycle down the residential streets of Merida. Here is our list of food vendors that go by our house (by the sounds they make):
Clown Bike Horn – The most frequent and most annoying. These tricycle carts go by dozens of times a day reaching their peak between 6PM and 10PM. You can buy bread and pastries, but we can’t vouch for their freshness.
Bell – These vendors come equipped with cones and ice cream in coolers. Very tempting on a hot day.
Loud Speaker – The speaker extols the virtues of their flans made of wonderful eggs and milk and costing a mere 2.5-3 pesos per serving (their words).
Yelling – Every Thursday, a lady walks down the street yelling “TAMALES!” while her husband pushes a cart of huge warm fresh tamales – chicken, chaya, pork, and more. Adam frequently chases her down.
Hydraulic Horn – Cara refuses to buy pozole from this vendor in protest of the awful noise.
