On Penguin Safari

Just checking in from the Southland of NZ. Still lots of sheep. Starting to lose track of the days.

Hiked to an old lumber town which was shut down 70 years ago and it’s sinking in how brief European’s history is in NZ. We drove through the oldest European settled town the other day – 1824. The late Western influence of NZ has deprived them of many things – most notably central heating, faucets with one spout for hot and cold, and spaghettio’s.

Down here, we’ve holed up in a cabin (with electricity this time) spending our evenings combing sandy beaches looking for blue penguins and the elusive yellow-eyed penguins (YEP’s) and spending our days wearing our feet out on the many scenic hikes in this area. We’re on waterfall # 46.

Thankfully even (some of) the tiny towns have internet cafes, though in this case they are running windows 98.
